The Rutgers New Jersey Ballot Project is a grant-funded project of Bloustein School Professor Julia Sass Rubin and Rutgers Law School Professor Ronald Chen, to collect historical primary and general election ballots for a publicly available statewide repository. This project aims to create a singular source for researchers across the state to access primary data regarding New Jersey elections.

Position Overview

The Research Assistant will contribute to the ongoing ballot collection and organization work of the project, including:

● Coordinating communication with County Clerk Offices in South Jersey to schedule site visits

● Visiting county clerk offices, primarily in South Jersey, to scan historical primary and general election ballots

● Uploading and organizing scanned ballots in an online content management software (i.e., Box)

● Assisting onboarded team members with in-progress data collection efforts, organization, and website content creation

This position will require regular travel throughout South Jersey to collect historical New Jersey primary and general election ballots.

Position Qualifications

The Research Assistant must possess the following:

● Lives in or is willing to commute to South Jersey (Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem, and Ocean) consistently

● Access to a car

● Ideally, access to a tablet/device that can create PDFs

● Detail-orientation

● Ability to work independently and as part of a team with the project’s ongoing research assistants and principal investigators.

The position is for 15 to 40 hours a week and pays $20/hour for 1st year graduate students and $21/hour for 2nd year graduate students. This position is temporary (May 2025 to September 2025), with the potential for extension until December 2025.
