More about the position:
SPP looks at corridors and intersections identified as Vision Zero Priorities based on high rates of pedestrians killed and seriously injured (KSI) and implements improvements from our safety toolkit, including raised crosswalks, curb extensions, protected bike lanes, plaza creation/slip lane closure, lane reductions/reorganizations, bus boarding islands under elevated trains, and more. We work on an annual cycle to deliver Street Improvement Projects, with construction/implementation running April-October (when temps are high enough for asphalt and paint installation) and project planning primarily October-April. This is a job great for people passionate about safety who are interested in making a visible difference in our city, and who enjoy work where every day can look different.
Daily tasks include:
-Creating and giving community presentations in PPT with Adobe Illustrator maps/graphics
-AutoCAD Map 3D, drawing improvement proposals in line with our engineering typicals
-Coordination and discussion with other DOT teams (e.g. bikes, transit, freight), community boards, DOT Borough Commissioners Offices, MTA, etc
-Analyzing crash and injury data to determine appropriate treatments
-Regular out of office field visits for constructability checks, layout/construction start, before/after photos, and conditions checks
-Coordinating construction/implementation between our various departments (e.g. Geometric Design/Markings engineers and contractors, Concrete engineering and construction, Signals, signage and delineators, etc)
