CIPL is looking for a Privacy and Data Policy Specialist (Term-Limited, 6 Months) to join our team in our Washington, DC office or New York office for a 6-month term. This role reports to CIPL’s Director of Privacy and Data Policy and will also work with CIPL’s global team of experts based in London and Brussels.  This is a project position.

About the Role:

The primary purpose of the Privacy and Data Policy Specialist is to help support CIPL’s global policy priorities and initiatives. Day-to-day Responsibilities Include:

  • Working closely with CIPL team members to research, develop strategies and implement project plans to advance CIPL’s global policy agenda. This includes the following topics:
    • Proposed legislation and rule-making;
    • Developments in cutting-edge technologies and how data laws and regulations interact with them;
    • Cross-border data flows;
    • Data localization;
    • Accountability-based information management;
    • Accountable AI governance best practices
    • Regional developments (e.g., Europe, US (state and federal), Canada, Latin America, India, and Asia-Pacific);
    • The role of corporate data protection or privacy officers and other relevant organizational data and AI governance officers;
    • Privacy, data and AI risk assessment and management;
    • Transparency and user control;
    • Privacy preserving technologies (PPTs);
    • Data driven innovation;
    • Data analytics;
    • Cloud computing;
    • Data sharing between and among private sector organizations and public sector organizations;
    • Children’s data, privacy and safety; and
    • Effective and smart regulatory strategy and oversight with cross-disciplinary regulatory coordination.
  • Helping to develop specific policy positions by working with CIPL leadership and CIPL member companies.
  • Working with CIPL’s Director of Privacy and Data Policy to monitor policy, business, and technology trends relevant to CIPL’s mission and summarizing and communicating findings to CIPL staff and CIPL members.
  • Helping to maintain CIPL’s reputation as recognized experts and policy thought leaders by staying abreast of US and global public policy developments in data protection, AI, and related areas and by anticipating relevant emerging issues.
  • Seeking opportunities for and helping to manage collaboration with CIPL member companies, think tanks, academics, industry groups and policy influencers to advance CIPL’s policy agenda.
  • Drafting regulatory comments, white papers, issue briefs and articles.
  • Developing agendas and content for CIPL and non-CIPL events and speaking/representing CIPL at these events.
  • Assisting with special projects relevant to CIPL’s mission and CIPL members.

About You – you will have:

  • Superb writing, analytical, and public speaking skills and the ability to distill and present complex information and concepts in a clear and persuasive way.
  • Ability to conduct and lead research on emerging technology, data , and AI laws, policy and organizational best practices and related legal and factual developments.
  • Strong understanding of data-driven innovation and technology trends and/or computer science.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial spirit and proactive attitude and eagerness to learn and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:
    •  Required: JD or Master’s in Public Policy or equivalent social science or technical degree.
    • Strongly preferred: degree or equivalent qualifications related to computer science and/or other emerging technologies.
  • Excellent knowledge of global data and technology laws and policy, and regulation of AI, data, and emerging technologies.
  • Experience writing white papers, public consultation responses and articles on issues related to privacy, data, AI and emerging tech law, policy and governance.
  • Understanding of technology trends, computer science and/or data analytics.
  • Regulatory or policy experience, competition law, online safety, cybersecurity.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.

Essential competency processes include language ability, reasoning and memory. The expected salary range for New York based employees is $84,800 to $130,800, though salaries for employees based outside of New York may differ. Beyond an employment candidate’s physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including but not limited to, education, training, and/or experience.
