Legislative Aide
Assemblyperson is seeking a Legislative Aide to work with the Chief of Staff in advancing and shaping the Assemblyperson’s legislative agenda. Responsibilities will include preparing briefing materials, talking points, memos, and developing ideas for new legislation. Other responsibilities will include answering phones, meeting with and responding to constituents, and attending events throughout the district.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
- Developing legislation, preparing memos, and other briefing material as needed.
- Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, elected officials, state agencies, advocacy organizations, and the Assembly staff.
- Engage constituents through events, stakeholder meetings, and community outreach.
- Represent the Assemblyperson at meetings and events, including meetings with neighborhood stakeholders and special interest groups.
- Ensure the Assemblyperson’s schedule is accurate and up-to-date and that they have all materials (talking points, background materials, citations, driving directions, etc.) needed for each meeting and event on the calendar.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Very strong oral and written communication, organizational, and analytical skills
- Thoroughness and careful attention to detail
- Familiarity with the legislative process and local district issues
- Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant, and professional manner
- Works well under pressure with the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities at once
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Office Suite, and social media platforms
- Self-starter with exemplary judgment and political sensitivity
- Written and verbal fluency in at least one non-English language is highly desired, but not required
Education and experience:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year of experience is preferred.
Location: The Assemblyperson’s primary office will be located within their legislative district. If you are only willing to commute daily to specific counties, please list those counties when you email your resume.
Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L 2011, Chapter 70), applicant must be a New Jersey resident or establish residency within one year of employment.
Physical demands:
The Legislative Aide must hold a valid driver’s license to attend events and will be required to assist in the physical set-up and preparation for special events and activities.
