The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track position in Geography at the rank of assistant professor with an anticipated start date of August 15th, 2022. We seek a geographer whose innovative teaching and research use geospatial techniques to address research questions in human geography, such as urban geography, political ecology, health geography, environmental justice, transportation geography, economic geography, cultural geography, and political geography.
We welcome applicants with a background in participatory GIS, feminist GIS, critical GIS, or other innovative and engaged GIS approaches, as well as applicants who use geospatial techniques to examine the human dimensions of socio-environmental processes. We encourage applicants with the capacity to contribute to teaching geography and geospatial courses within their area of specialization, and existing courses in the department.
Applicants will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses (2/semester) in their subdiscipline of expertise, academically advise undergraduate students, and supervise master’s as well as doctoral level graduate students. Successful applicants will hold a Ph.D. in geography or a closely related field at the time of appointment and demonstrate (1) evidence of (or the potential for) excellence in research, teaching, and student mentoring; (2) a record of peer-reviewed publications; (3) the capacity to develop and direct an active, externally funded research program;(4) a commitment to professional service; and (5) a commitment to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Department of Geosciences currently has 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty, seven clinical professors, and four full-time instructors. Within the department, there are four areas of disciplinary emphasis: Geology, Geography, Geospatial Science, and Atmospheric Science which offer numerous opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration focused on the global climate system. The department is closely aligned with a number of MSU research centers including the Geosystems Research Institute (www.gri.msstate.edu), the High Performance Computing Collaboratory (www.hpc.msstate.edu), and the Institute for Imaging and Analytical Technologies (www.i2at.msstate.edu). Mississippi State University holds the “Very High Research Activity” (R1) designation from the Carnegie Foundation, and is ranked in the top 100, for research and development expenditures, among all institutions in the National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development Survey.
