Overview

The City of Takoma Park seeks a part-time Special Projects Coordinator responsible for the City’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program,  and coordination of associated grant applications, grant reporting, and financial management with the Maryland State Highway Association (MD-SHA). The focus of the work is on correcting issues of pedestrian and bike safety, and associated education or training programs. This Coordinator works closely with the administrators and PTAs of the five local schools that participate in the SRTS programming. This Coordinator also works closely with Montgomery County’s Safe Kids program.

Typical duties include:

  • Managing projects and programs; overseeing and delivering program goals and objectives for grant-funded and other initiatives; monitoring program budgets.
  • Writing grant documents, reports and evaluations; preparing grant documents and supplemental materials to support proposed activities; completing quarterly reports; conducting bi-annual surveys;
  • Developing and maintaining strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders; attending and presenting at community meetings;
  • Coordinating details, logistics, volunteers and vendors for outreach and educational events; recruiting and supervising the work of volunteers;
  • Researching topic areas; developing curricula and models; providing direct, hands-on instruction; developing, planning and conducting trainings for individuals; scheduling in-school educational programs; distributing, collecting and analyzing related survey data;
  • Developing and implementing marketing, promotional and public relations plans; utilizing traditional and social media outlets; writing articles and press releases;
  • Overseeing infrastructure projects; ensuring compliance with environmental and ADA requirements; attending community forums; completing Davis-Bacon compensation questionnaire processes; interfacing with vendors, schools and residents; coordinating project management with departmental and Public Works personnel;
  • Answering email from residents, vendors, government representatives, and stakeholders; procuring materials and requesting payments; attending departmental meetings;
  • Performing related duties.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required to be successful are:

  • Knowledge of grant development and management principles;
  • Knowledge of program management, marketing principles and practices;
  • Skill in recruitment and supervision of volunteers;
  • Skill in preparing clear and precise reports;
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

This position is subject to membership in the AFSCME union. The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $27.03 to $31.84 per hour and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. The City telework policy allows remote work up to 60 percent time.
