Position Responsibilities Summary

The GIS Specialist supports planning and marketing staff using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) platforms. Their primary responsibilities include: the creation and maintenance of spatial data; the production of maps to compliment reports, presentations, informational brochures, and websites; and the creation of web-based interactive maps that are accessible to non-GIS professionals. The GIS Specialist will also have the opportunity to work on transportation planning tasks outside of GIS. Typical subject areas include bicycle and pedestrian planning, public transportation, and electric vehicles. The GIS Specialist is part of the Cross County Connection’s Technical Staff and reports directly to the Program Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Developing print, web and mobile maps
  • Developing research and analysis methods
  • Data Collection using resources including, but not limited to, the United States Census Bureau, the New Jersey Department of Highway Traffic Safety, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, NJ Geographic Information Network, county and local governments 
  • Conducting data and mapping analysis
  • Effectively communicating work product through written reports, printed and digital maps, presentations and other formats
  • Maintaining the functionality of GIS software and hardware to ensure the organization’s continued map making and geographic analysis capabilities

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting pedestrian and bicycle safety audits and other planning tasks
  • Electric vehicle outreach, education, and planning assistance for private and public sector clients
  • Public transit customer service, trip planning, and travel training
  • Community outreach

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems or the demonstration of significant GIS course work associated with a degree in Planning, Geography or a related field
  • 1+ years of experience using ArcGIS in a professional environment or internships
  • An interest and background in transportation planning is preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency using ArcMap 10 and ArcGIS Pro to conduct research, generate maps and maintain data without supervision 
  • Ability to create and maintain databases in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with map layout, design, labeling, symbolization, and large format printing
  • Ability to geocode addresses and generate quality location-based datasets for analysis 
  • Ability and willingness to conduct field work using ArcGIS Collector and other methods
  • Experience publishing data to ArcGIS Online, Google My Maps, and maintaining data on web portals
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing and public speaking skills
  • Familiarity with open-source transportation data (GTFS) and converting transit data to/from KML and Shapefile formats is a plus
  • Experience producing web mapping applications and interactive maps to display spatial information is a plus, but not required
  • Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus, but not required

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • A positive attitude and eagerness to collaborate and work with CCCTMA’s planning and marketing staff to achieve our mission to create equitable, safe, and environmentally sustainable transportation options in South Jersey
  • Proficient with MSWord, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability and willingness to represent organization at state, regional and local meetings and present information in front of large audiences
  • Valid driver’s license and availability of reliable personal vehicle to travel to meetings and conduct field work required
  • Physical requirements generally occurring in an office environment, including but not limited to, light lifting (normally under 50 pounds)
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday, from 8:30 to 5:00 PM at the organization’s Marlton office with some opportunity for telework
  • Access to reliable internet and home computer/laptop if participating in telework program
