Overview

The Transportation, Planning, and Analysis Unit of The City of Philadelphia’s Department of Streets is seeking interns in transportation planning, project management, and program analysis. Successful candidates will gain exposure to the current practice of transportation planning & project implementation in City government and in coordination with our regional partners.

Responsibilities for staff in this role can include:  
Project mapping and geospatial analysis
Program database development
Research and analysis
Preparing content for presentations and reporting
Tracking and recording project status updates
Preparing project documentation
Coordination with internal and external partners, including but not limited to organizing, scheduling, and documenting meetings
Assisting senior project managers in overseeing and managing schedules and milestones

Skillsets and Knowledge 
Knowledge and skillsets of interest include:
Geographic information systems (GIS) mapping
Street design principles
Philadelphia geography
Transportation planning documents
Regional transportation agencies and service partners
Local, state, and federal transportation funding programs and policies
Grant application writing and/or grant funding management
Preferred computer software experience includes:
Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel and/or SharePoint
ArcGIS
Adobe Creative Suite

Work Schedule
We regularly hire throughout the year for part-time and full-time internship opportunities.
Part-time –10-20 hours per week. This time can be flexible throughout the school year.
Full-time (during summer) – 37.5 hours per week.
This internship will be in person at the Municipal Services Building in Center City Philadelphia. Currently, interns are eligible for a free SEPTA public transportation pass.

Compensation 
This is a paid hourly internship, not contingent on academic work-study eligibility. This position is also available for international students currently studying in Philadelphia.

Minimum Education and Training
Preference to candidates enrolled in a master’s program in transportation planning or related field, or minimally three years of an undergraduate college program. An equivalent combination of experience and training plus interest or involvement in transportation planning will also be considered.

About Department of Streets, Transportation Planning & Analysis (TPA) - Capital Planning

The Streets Department designs, builds, and maintains the City’s streets, roadways, and bridge structures. In addition to building new infrastructure, we maintain and operate streetlights and traffic control devices.  The Transportation, Planning, and Analysis Unit (TPA) within the Philadelphia Streets Department Transportation Division provides various functions such as capital planning, grants development and administration, project management, database management, ADA design and review, purchasing, and project bidding and contracting.  The Capital Planning team plans and coordinates the alignment of the Department’s capital programming with available funding and the City’s strategic transportation goals.
