Hardesty & Hanover’s Community Planning Group assists villages, towns, and cities in envisioning and preparing for the future and identifying the policies, programs, and infrastructure investments that will lead them on the path forward. The Community Planning Group has several full-time positions open in the Rye, NY or New York, NY offices for urban planners who have recently graduated or have up to three years of work experience in the field.

The Community Planning Group’s clients are typically municipalities in the Northeast and the assignments span all aspects of planning from comprehensive plans to zoning codes. We also work on interdisciplinary projects for state agencies with the firm’s civil, structural, and traffic engineering groups.

Applicants for this position should be comfortable taking initiative and learning new processes quickly. You should be able to support a variety of projects simultaneously, write clearly, and produce high-quality work products. As an urban planner with the Community Planning Group, you will interface with municipal boards, subconsultants, and members of the public. You will assist in business development by preparing proposals and participating in interviews with prospective clients.

Occasional travel within the tri-state area may be required to undertake field visits and to participate in meetings and public engagement events.

Applicants should have:

  • A Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture with up to three years of experience in the field (or a Bachelor’s degree with up to three years of post-college experience in the urban planning field.)
  • Experience and proficiency in cartographic and design software, including ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite. Proficiency in other programs such as Sketchup and AutoCAD is a plus.
