Overview
Housing Resiliency Intern with the Resiliency Planning & Policy Unit in the Office of Neighborhood Strategies
About the Agency:
The New York City Department of Housing Preservation Development (HPD) promotes quality and affordability in the city’s housing, and diversity and strength in the city’s neighborhoods because every New Yorker deserves a safe, affordable place to live in a neighborhood they love.
• We maintain building and resident safety and health
• We create opportunities for New Yorkers through housing affordability
• We engage New Yorkers to build and sustain neighborhood strength and diversity.
HPD is entrusted with fulfilling these objectives through the goals and strategies of “Housing Our Neighbors: A Blueprint for Housing and Homelessness,” Mayor Adams’ comprehensive housing framework. To support this important work, the administration has committed $5 billion in new capital funding, bringing the 10-year planned investment in housing to $22 billion—the largest in the city’s history. This investment, coupled with a commitment to reduce administrative and regulatory barriers, is a multi-pronged strategy to tackle New York City’s complex housing crisis, by addressing homelessness and housing instability, promoting economic stability and mobility, increasing homeownership opportunities, improving health and safety, and increasing opportunities for equitable growth.
Your Team:
The Office of Neighborhood Strategies (ONS) is charged with ensuring that HPD’s development and preservation efforts are guided by meaningful community engagement and coordinated with public investments
in infrastructure and services, as put forth in the Mayor’s Housing Plan. The Climate and Social Resiliency Planning and Policy Unit (CSRPP) is located within ONS’s Division of Planning & Predevelopment. The mission of CSRPP is to ensure the agency’s planning and policy initiatives promote household and community access to safe, quality, and affordable housing, even in the face of current and future risks from climate change, and other physical, economic, and social shocks and stressors. The intern is a member of this team.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
As an intern with the CSRPP team, you will be supporting the ongoing update of climate design standards within HPD’s Design Guidelines for New Construction and Preservation.
• Researching and analyzing previously approved affordable housing projects and climate resiliency best practices related to building design, open space planning, and rooftop uses.
• Creating summary presentations, charts, and other internal & public-facing materials;
• Collaborating with other ONS and HPD design review teams on Design Guidelines update work;
• Assisting with meetings with internal and external stakeholders;
• Other tasks and special projects as needed.
Preferred skills and Experience:
1. Project management: Ability to organize a workplan, take initiative, and work effectively with others. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
2. Subject matter expertise: Knowledge of and/or interest in learning about New York City government, housing, climate resiliency, and neighborhood development issues preferred.
The Department of Housing Preservation & Development and the City of New York is an equal opportunity employer.
3. Good judgment: Ability to analyze a situation, understand when additional input is needed, resolve issues independently, and escalate when appropriate.
4. Communication: Excellent written, graphic, and public speaking skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint preferred.
5. Commitment to social justice: Commitment to advancing racial equity and inclusion and an understanding of the historic and systemic causes of inequity.
