Title: Transportation Planning Intern
Department: Division of Engineering, Department of Roads and Public Property
Location: 830 Bergen Ave, Jersey City, NJ
Duration: Summer 2025, with possibility to continue into Fall 2025
Compensation: $18.10 an hour, 35 hours per week

The Hudson County Division of Engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping the infrastructure and transportation systems that support Hudson County. We are committed to advancing efficient and sustainable transportation networks that improve the quality of life for residents and businesses alike.
Position Overview:
The Transportation Planning Internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an essential government transportation agency. You will work alongside experienced professionals to support projects that enhance urban mobility, safety, and the overall livability of the region. As an intern, you will engage in technical and strategic planning tasks, conduct research, and assist in the development of reports and presentations that help inform county policies and infrastructure development.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with transportation data collection, analysis, and modeling for ongoing planning projects.
– Draft clear and concise reports, memos, and presentations that communicate technical findings to non-technical stakeholders.
– Collaborate with other departments, external agencies, and consultants on projects related to transportation, land use, and urban development including but not limited to:
- Support federally funded road safety projects throughout the county
- Participation in and preparing memos from North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (Hudson County regional metropolitan planning organization) committee and board meetings
- Prepare and present transportation updates to the Hudson County Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy committee at quarterly meetings
– Assist with Vison Zero policy and project implementation in coordination with the Division of Planning
– Attend project meetings and contribute to discussions, offering research findings and suggestions for improvement.
– Support the preparation of public outreach materials and participate in community engagement activities.
– Attend training and seminars when possible
Qualifications:
– Current student pursuing a bachelors or master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Geography, or a related field.
– Basic knowledge of transportation planning principles, urban development, and infrastructure systems.
– Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical information clearly.
– Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
– Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
– Previous experience in urban planning, transportation, or public-sector work is a plus but not required.
