COUNTY of UNION Internship Opportunity

Background

County of Union is a government entity established in 1857. Union County is comprised of 21 municipalities and encompasses 103.4 square miles. Union County is rich in its location, diverse communities and population, economic base, and excellent transportation access.

Union County’s Department of Economic Development promotes smart growth principles and sensible commercial and economic revitalization in coordination with multimodal transportation enhancements.

The Department of Economic Development has a diverse mission which includes a strong cooperation with local  government agencies to establish and advance core projects that will promote the economic revitalization of the County. The Department also administers community development programs, cultural affairs, land use planning, and coordinates transportation projects with various state, regional, and local agencies.

Internship Description

The County seeks college interns with interest in the following majors: Urban Studies/Planning, Public Administration, Political Science, Law, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Architecture/Landscape, and civil/traffic engineering. Successful candidate(s) will be introduced to a dynamic and fast paced organization that is involved in diverse projects. The intern(s) will assist staff in land use development, regional multimodal transportation enhancement, master planning, brownfield redevelopment, grant administration and public outreach. Along with developing associated geographic information layers related planning items.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would be a graduate student or college senior with relevant academic experience or looking for an internship in a dynamic program. The ideal candidate would be a flexible, enthusiastic selfstarter, and would have:

Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills;
Strong analytical and computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Business Software;

Geographical Information System experience a plus;

Capacity to simultaneously work on multiple tasks and projects and to set priorities to manage a multifaceted
workload;

Interest in government and planning.

Submission of one writing sample which may include articles, papers, reports, or other related material.

Must be available to work 16 to 20 hours per week during standard workday hours.

Internship is for the spring, summer or fall semesters.
