Nature and Disability Advocate

This is a new position within the Pinelands Preservation Alliance (PPA) to engage with government agencies, nonprofits and community members to ensure that the Pinelands’ natural places are accessible to people with disabilities. This position will lead a new Access Nature Forum, work with PPA staff and partners to carry out transformative projects that empower people with disabilities to enjoy natural places, and work to create an inclusive culture of nature-based recreation and health.

It is very important to us that this position attract applications from people who identify as having a disability.

This will initially be a one-half time position, but PPA aims to make it full-time in the future.  The position will be hybrid between remote, field and office work.

PPA is dedicated to furthering justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in its staff and work. We want everyone to know the Pinelands is theirs to enjoy through low-impact recreation, and to help people of all means, backgrounds and abilities to enjoy the many benefits this unique natural area provides.

Applicants must:

·         Have at least two years of relevant work experience,

·         Be an excellent communicator who can build productive relationships with a wide range of people,

·         Be highly organized and enjoy working in teams,

·         Be comfortable using Zoom, social media and web sites,

·         Live in South Jersey, and

·         Have access to a vehicle and the ability to travel around the Pinelands.


·         Organize and lead a regular Access Nature Forum in which people with disabilities and their allies share experiences and develop strategies to improve access to natural places.

·         Work with the executive director and other staff to plan and carry out PPA’s The Pinelands Is for Everyone initiative.

·         Visit trails and scenic sites to evaluate their accessibility, add information about sites to PPA’s AccessNatureNJ.org web site (in development), and suggest improvements to agencies that own and manage public open spaces to improve accessibility.

·         Connect with and provide ongoing support in the region’s communities of disability advocates, activists, and support organizations.

·         Attend local organizational and municipal meetings to promote nature access and PPA’s work.  These meetings may occur on weekends and evenings.

·         Maintain regular communications with individuals, government agencies and organizations involved in this field, such as State Parks superintendents, centers for independent living, and individuals.

·         Help advance the organization’s diversity, equity, inclusion and justice goals by identifying and supporting underserved populations and communities of color.

·         Represent PPA and the Pinelands conservation movement in a positive manner aligned with PPA’s mission and values.

·         Perform additional duties as necessary to support the organization.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a half-time position, for 20 hours per week, with 4 weeks paid vacation, access to a 403b retirement savings plan, and additional time off for sick and personal leave. The starting salary is $35,000 per year.
