Overview

The Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM) seeks two candidates to serve as Transit Policy Advisor (Senior Transit Planner) within its Transit Development (TD) unit. The Transit Development unit is responsible for developing transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies in order to improve mobility for all New Yorkers. The group creates location-specific projects to increase the speed and reliability of bus operations, and to improve pedestrian access to transit. TD also serves as a resource to the agency on public transit related matters, including acting as one of the key points of contact with the MTA agencies. The candidate will coordinate work for the unit related to capital projects, including the initiation and development of TD-sponsored capital projects, and the review of projects sponsored by other DOT units.

The Transit Policy Advisor will oversee studies, programs and projects centered on improving access and experience of transit use in NYC. Reporting to the Director of Transit Policy and Planning, candidates will work collaboratively with Transit Policy team members initiatives including but not limited to the procurement and rollout of Real Time bus arrival signs and other technology engagements, NYC DOT coordination on future Bus Network Redesigns led by the MTA, the continued implementation and evaluation of Transit Signal Priority and accessibility improvements at bus stops and subway stations. Candidates will lead outreach with the general public, work with community boards and other public stakeholders in public workshops, presentations, and other settings. Candidates will work collaboratively within the TD unit, closely with other DOT staff, and with other City, State, and Federal agencies (particularly the MTA). Candidates may also manage bus priority implementation projects by participating in planning, public outreach, design, implementation or monitoring activities, and conduct various technical planning analyses as directed by the unit director.

The Division of Transportation Planning & Management is responsible for the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City’s streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working and doing business in New York City.  The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
