Position Summary

Nishuane Group, a minority owned and operated Planning firm, is seeking a Part-Time GIS analyst to analyze and visualize geospatial data. The firm is located in Montclair, NJ. We provide planning assistance to a number of municipalities throughout Essex and Union counties, as well as professional expert witness testimony to private clients throughout Northern and Central New Jersey. We offer a team environment that fosters creativity and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Source spatial, quantitative, and qualitative data
  • Produce and manage maps from various datasets using manual and automated processes
  • Process and analyze large datasets
  • Assist with basic spatial analysis tasks such as spatial joins, buffers, and layer creation
  • Support with data management and validation
  • Document methodology utilized for analysis
  • Work on redevelopment, complete streets, and green streets plans
  • Maintain file structure/directory when working on or creating projects
  • Ensure color contrast accessibility when possible
  • Offer new or alternative ideas, solutions, and methodologies

Skills & Qualifications

Required:

  • Motivated self-starter able to work independently
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Capable of providing constructive criticism and seeking feedback
  • Acquainted with GIS software, ideally QGIS
  • Familiar with data analysis and interpretation
  • Knowledge of basic graphic design principles
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator or GIMP
  • Working knowledge of GIS mapping processes
  • Interested in applying GIS to real-world applications
  • Enrolled in an accredited associate, bachelor’s, or graduate degree program in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Architecture, Engineering, or other related discipline

Preferred:

  • Familiar with Adobe Photoshop
  • Basic programming knowledge, preferably Python, Java, JavaScript, or R
  • Ability to create Online interactive maps such as Leaflet or ArcGIS Online
  • Familiar with transit, pedestrian, and bicycle infrastructure and planning
  • Familiar with parcel, USGS, and transit data such as MOD-IV, DEMs, and GTFS
