The Office of the Council President is seeking a highly motivated GIS Fellow for the fall 2022 semester. The GIS Fellowship provides students with valuable experience working in an interdisciplinary policy environment, experiencing first-hand how spatial analysis informs local decision making.

Reporting to the Director of GIS and IT Services in Philadelphia City Council’s Technical Staff, the GIS Fellow can expect to assist in a wide range of planning, mapping, and policy projects.

Desired skills include:
▪ Minimum experience of one semester’s worth of coursework in Geographic Information Systems (required); and
▪ Microsoft Office Suite (familiarity with Access a plus);
▪ Demonstrated proficiency using Esri ArcMap/Pro 10.x in data analysis, editing and map production;
▪ R, Python, or other coding/web development skills;
▪ Experience with ArcGIS Online for content publishing and sharing of custom web maps and apps a plus;
▪ Strong quantitative analytical capabilities;
▪ Familiarity with local geography/demography;
▪ Active interest in local government and policy issues related to housing and community development;

About Philadelphia City Council

City Council Fellows can expect to receive a competitive hourly wage averaging 20 hours of work per week, depending on the Fellow’s schedule. Alternatively, applicants are also encouraged to communicate with their academic programs to determine if academic credit or matching work-study compensation is available. Our program has a long history of working with schools to customize a work experience to satisfy any academic requirements necessary for academic credit or independent study.

This position carries a residency requirement and the successful candidate must establish residency in Philadelphia within six months of being hired.
