Mission Statement & Position Overview
New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (New Jersey LCV) is a bi-partisan organization whose mission is to elect environmental champions, hold public officials accountable, and support laws which protect our environment and improve the quality of people’s lives. We are committed to and incorporate into all our work the goal of helping establish a just, inclusive, and equitable environmental future for New Jersey.

The ideal Policy and Organizing Intern is a motivated, energetic person who is passionate about restoring and protecting the environment, and interested in learning about and, ideally, has an academic focus on environmental policy, outreach, the legislative process, and environmental activism. They are looking to meet and work with other environmentally minded people at a leading state-based advocacy organization. This opportunity gives a talented student the rare chance to see behind-the-scenes workings of politics and organizing, and insight into the State House legislative process and what it actually takes to make an impact through policy and advocacy.

This is a part-time paid internship from July – December, 2024.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Deepen knowledge of state-level policy relating to the environment, public health and voting rights by conducting independent background research on legislation and policy topics to organize and prepare the policy team for legislative testimony, coalition meetings and other engagement opportunities.
  • Conduct research on potential partner organizations.
  • Gain knowledge about current political activity by identifying and tracking legislation moving through Trenton, including committee hearings and voting records.
  • Utilize and have the opportunity to enhance creative writing skills by developing outreach materials on topics relevant to New Jersey politics, and internal memos for the staff; present when needed.
  • Assist in event planning, outreach and coordination, and strategic planning.
  • Gain an opportunity to represent New Jersey LCV at partner and coalition meetings, tablings, rallies, and legislative hearings as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Opportunity to plan and participate in university career fairs representing New Jersey LCV.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and collaboratively.
  • Personable, dependable team player.
  • Commitment to environmental conservation, or interest in political work preferred.
  • Educational or professional background in public policy or environmental policy preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, but not required.
  • The candidate must have reliable transportation.

Compensation: Part-time internships are paid, and we are happy to work with interns for college credits. Compensation is $15 an hour, for 15 hours/week. Letters of recommendation are available upon request.

Interns will work remotely, as well as come to our office in Hamilton New Jersey (ideally) at least once a week, and attend events as needed.
