Position: Real Estate Development Assistant II

Position Summary

This position will provide firsthand experience in all phases of the real estate development process by directly helping the President of the company and other staff with several affordable housing and community development projects. The job involves moving current projects to construction and finding new affordable housing development opportunities and securing approvals and financing. This will include housing for first time home buyers, special needs housing, rental, mixed-use and mixed income projects with financing from federal, state, local and private sources. The opportunity includes roles as lead developer, co-developer, consultant or technical assistance provider in urban and suburban municipalities throughout New Jersey.  The company is currently working on a 20 unit mixed used development in Maplewood, working with 3 nonprofit clients on their pipeline and more.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

·        Help to find sites for development

·        Help establish development potential of sites by reviewing zoning and developing financial plans

·        Prepare budgets, cashflows, project descriptions, and schedules

·        Assist with the site research, due diligence, and acquisition process from offer to closing

·        Assist with identifying, applying for, and closing on short term and long-term financing

·        Assist with applications to government funders and financial institutions

·        Assist in preparing presentations for investors and with closings

·        Assist with community meetings, securing approvals including zoning and permits for construction

·        Assist in management of development team members including architects, engineers, attorneys, contractors, public officials, etc.

·        Assist with operations issues and marketing strategies

·        Assist President and other staff with clients

Requirements and Skills

Interested in the development of real estate and affordable housing. Computer literacy required. Strong proficiency with MS Excel and budgeting necessary. College student preferably in Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Community Development, Finance, Public Management or related field.  Must be thoughtful and able to work with others. Must be dedicated, open minded, eager to learn and grow. Must be an initiative-taker not intimated by complex problems or difficult situations. Must be a diligent worker, independent thinker and have a positive attitude.  Strong communications and writing skills required. Must have ability to plan, multitask, and make sure others achieve milestones in a timeline fashion.

Compensation and Application Process
