Principal Community Planner – Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development

40 Hours/week; Full-Time; Exempt

Somerset County is seeking an experienced, detail oriented and motivated professional to serve as the Principal Community Planner in the Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development.  Somerset County is a recognized leader in planning in New Jersey.  The Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development works with the Board of County Commissioners, County departments, divisions and Boards and Commissions, local governments, non-profits, and the business community to coordinate efforts to build a strong economic environment, develop high-wage employment growth, and protect open space and historic resources throughout the County. The Office oversees the Office of Economic Development, Office of County GIS Services and the Office of the Cultural and Heritage Commission.  The Office serves as staff to the Somerset County Planning Board, Somerset County Agriculture Development Board, Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission, the Somerset County Energy Council, the Open Space Advisory Committee, Green Leadership Hub and the Regional Center Partnership of Somerset County.

Essential Qualifications

The position provides technical and administrative support to the Regional Center Partnership.   Supports the Land Development Review Section of County Office of Planning, Policy and Economic Development by providing land develop review services and development agreement monitoring for six (6) municipalities. The position also supports the Special Projects Section for regional planning and County Master Planning efforts and the Housing and Demographics Section for housing policies and planning matters. The position provides technical support and expertise on redevelopment matters to internal divisions and municipalities. The position accomplishes its goals by conducting research, holding public outreach and consensus building meetings, writing reports, oral presentations and by providing planning assistance to various governmental entities, nonprofit organizations, and the general public.

Essential Requirements 

A bachelor’s degree in planning or closely related field.
A master’s degree may be substituted for two years of direct planning experience.
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience with land development review, community and regional planning and county and local master plan development.
Public outreach and presentation skills.

Professional Planners License and American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
Experience with or a combination of economic development, redevelopment planning, transportation planning, and community engagement is desired.
Advanced courses in GIS, with ability to perform analysis, measurements, and map-making layouts.
