About DOER
The Department of Energy Resources’ (DOER) mission is to create a clean, affordable, resilient, and equitable energy future for all in the Commonwealth. As the State Energy Office, DOER is the primary energy policy agency for the Commonwealth. DOER supports the Commonwealth’s clean energy goals as part of a comprehensive Administration-wide response to the threat of climate change. DOER focuses on transitioning our energy supply to lower emissions, reducing and shaping energy demand, and improving our energy system infrastructure. To meet our objectives, DOER connects and collaborates with energy stakeholders to develop effective policy. DOER implements this policy through planning, regulation, and providing funding. DOER provides tools to individuals, organizations, and communities to support their clean energy goals. DOER is committed to transparency and education, supporting the accessible access to energy information and knowledge. 

The 2025 DOER Summer Internship Program will run from June 2 – August 15. DOER is hiring six full-time, paid summer interns.

A Communications Intern – learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gFUG57up – The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources is seeking an intern to support External Affairs and stakeholder engagement. External Affairs is part of DOER’s Coordination and Engagement team and leads DOER’s communications efforts, including media relations, stakeholder engagement, public events, web content, and social media.

An Energy Efficiency Intern – learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gCC3ydRcThis internship position will support the Energy Efficiency Division in its work on the Commonwealth’s recently updated building energy codes and the development of programs and policies to decarbonize existing buildings

A Leading By Example (LBE) Intern – learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gnDUpyxC The Leading by Example Division (LBE) supports the adoption of a wide range of emissions reduction, sustainability, and clean energy efforts for Massachusetts state facilities. The LBE intern will work with all Division staff on developing and implementing a variety of decarbonization, renewable energy, electric vehicle (EV), and EV charging infrastructure projects and programs associated with state government operations. 

A Legal Intern – learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gMQ66GaM – DOER is seeking a legal intern to gain practical experience and to assist in providing legal services and support to DOER staff on various energy matters including administrative proceedings before the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) as well as other matters involving the energy industry in the Commonwealth. The intern may work on a variety of energy policy and regulatory issues concerning energy efficiency, solar, renewable and alternative energy, Massachusetts Green Communities, clean energy siting and permitting, electric transportation, and the impacts these policies may have on all energy consumers, including Environmental Justice, low-income, and vulnerable populations.   

A Policy and Planning Intern – learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gza4g8CvThe Policy, Planning, and Analysis Division supports the DOER’s energy policy work through research and analysis. The Policy Intern will support the Division’s work on energy burden, grid modernization, clean energy supply policy, and environmental justice. Projects for the Policy Intern will be based on Division needs but can take into account Intern interests and skills.

A Renewables Intern – learn more and apply at https://lnkd.in/gyNT6jaF – The Renewables Division administers the Renewable and Alternative Portfolio Standards (RPS and APS) for Massachusetts’ electric supply. The Division also manages the Solar Massachusetts Target (SMART) program and develops other programs to promote the growth of renewable energy. The Division is looking for a motivated candidate to assist with the implementation of these programs.  The internship will provide an excellent opportunity to expose the candidate to a variety of clean energy technologies and receive an introduction into policy development and program implementation.  Previous knowledge of the technologies is not required.
