Job Description: Nonprofit Administration/Policy Intern

About the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey (SHA):

The Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey (SHA) unites its diverse coalition of 120 member organizations to advance, promote, and increase supportive housing opportunities across New Jersey. SHANJ is a statewide, nonprofit organization, founded in 1998, whose mission is to promote and maintain a strong supportive housing industry in New Jersey serving people with special needs. How we work towards our mission:

●      Providing resources and services to our membership of over 100 organizations which include nonprofit and for-profit housing developers, service providers, allied statewide advocacy organizations, corporate vendors and professional organizations, all dedicated to the supportive housing industry

●      Strengthening the capacity of member organizations to provide supportive housing services through information, training, and collaboration

●      Advocating for innovation and systems-change to provide more flexible funding and increased mainstream housing opportunities to allow people with disabilities to live as independently as possible

●      Educating policy makers, elected officials, people living with disabilities/families and the public on the use and benefits of the supportive housing model

Purpose of the Internship:

To further the mission of the Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey in work included but not limited to updating our membership directory, addressing the current gaps in supportive housing resources, assisting with preparation for our annual conference through, and researching funding opportunities for SHA and its members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Data collection
Attend virtual meetings and in-person meetings (occasional and as schedule allows)
Research
Written and oral communication

Skills Needed:

●      Technical skills in Google Docs, Excel, etc.
●      Good organizational and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
●      Commitment to and willingness to learn about the nonprofit sector and the mission of SHA
●      Efficiency in multitasking, can handle multiple projects at once
●      Self-discipline and time-management skills needed to work independently
●      Dependable and punctual team player
●      Ability to summarize meeting content and take notes
●      Willing to learn about the nonprofit sector

Skills Gained Include:

●      Overall knowledge of nonprofit management, administration, policy
●      Understanding of event planning
●      Greater awareness of strategic-planning concepts
●      The ins and outs of the supportive housing industry and the diversity of SHA’s members
●      Networking
●      Professional development

Other General Requirements:

Must currently be working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in a field related to administration, and/or policy and be available at least 10-15 hours/week (exact days and times to be determined according to your schedule). This internship does not provide a stipend but has the potential for academic credit. Intern reports to SHA’s executive director Kate Kelly. Length of internship is flexible.
