JOB DESCRIPTION
DOT is seeking an urban design and planning student to join the Urban Design Group in Manhattan for an apprenticeship during the summer of 2023 as well as the 2023 – 2024 school year.
Position Description:
The Urban Design Apprentice will assist in executing urban design, streetscape, planning and transportation infrastructure projects of varying scales and complexities. Within a collaborative design studio environment, the apprentice will develop and coordinate strategic neighborhood and area-wide plans and will be responsible for investigating and proposing solutions for specific site conditions and designs; preparing site plans utilizing various computer-aided design and graphics software; reviewing designs and conducting site inspections; and presenting projects to other divisions and governmental agencies, consultants, community organizations and the general public. In addition to working on projects ranging from temporary pilots to permanent capital projects, the apprentice will be integral to producing the Fourth Edition of the Street Design Manual, particularly addressing design changes and guidelines borne out of the agency’s Open Streets and Open Restaurants initiatives. The apprentice will also pursue programs such as the El-Space Initiative aimed at developing a strategic design toolkit and planning framework to optimize space beneath and adjacent to elevated trains, bridges, and highways citywide.
Urban Design at DOT:
Located within The Office of Cityscape & Franchises, the Urban Design Group (UD) is committed to creating pedestrian-friendly and dynamic streetscapes, open spaces and infrastructure while focusing on place-making, environmental stewardship, technological innovation, social equity and economic viability. Serving as the agency’s liaison to NYC’s Public Design Commission and Landmarks Preservation Commission, the unit manages a diverse portfolio of planning and design projects subject to intra- and interagency approvals. UD develops master plans for project areas and performs a key role in designing and implementing multiple projects at varying scales to bring the comprehensive visions to life. Steward of the Street Design Manual, UD develops design standards and initiates programs that advance the agency’s mission and design principles of fostering safety, mobility, access, neighborhood context and sustainability.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- A student currently enrolled full time through May 2024 in an accredited landscape architectural program or related programs in urban design, architecture, urban planning, engineering, environmental studies and public policy.
- Aptitude in Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, GIS, Sketchup, and Rhino.
- Strong problem solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Effective communication and writing skills, strong organization and time management habits, and ability to work well independently and collaboratively.
Salary:
$17 – $20 per hour, depending on student enrollment status
Duration:
Summer (full time, 35 max. hours/week): May – September 2023
School Year (part time, 17 max. hours/week): September 2023 – May 2024
