Overview

The Westchester County Department of Planning offers opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to serve their local community and gain hands on experience in the fields of Land Use, Environment, Housing, Community Development, and Design.

Enjoy your summer gaining hands on experience with real world planning professionals across Westchester County! Interns would complete projects at one or more of the seven sections housed within the Department. Interns are expected to submit a final report and presentation upon completion of their internship outlining their major achievements.

Qualifications:

· Current undergraduate or graduate student or recent graduate

· Available to work 35 hours per week; M-F

· Must have a valid Driver’s License

· Excellent communication skills, data interpretation, and analysis skills

· Work location will be based at 148 Martine Avenue, White Plains. Hybrid work options available, based on agreements with your supervisor. Travel to offsite locations may be required based on the work program.

Program Details:

Environmental section applicants should have experience with ArcGIS applications, conducting field work in various weather conditions, providing environmental education lessons, managing large data sets, and an understanding of land use practices and stormwater management techniques is a plus. Interns will monitor aquatic restoration sites, complete environmental ordinance reviews, conduct interviews with community garden leaders, and support environmental education programs.

Design section applicants must be enrolled in a Landscape Architecture program from an accredited school and have experience with AutoCAD. Interns will prepare construction documents for sidewalks, playgrounds, and/or shared use paths.

Land Use section applicants should have experience with Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS. Interns will assist with updating land use data and conduct outreach to municipalities about Census data.

Housing and Community Development section interns will work on Lead Safe Westchester housing projects, update the affordable housing, develop and review proposals, budgets, presentations and bid documents; schedule and coordinate inspections, rehabilitation and site visits; and provide excellent customer service to property owners, contractors, residents, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
