The Rutgers Democracy Lab (RDL) is hiring – great for students in our Master of Public Policy and Master of Public Affairs and Politics programs.
Selected assistants will edit and post impactful communications to help build RDL’s blog Voices of Democracy submitted by undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, alumni, and other Rutgers stakeholders. This is a perfect way for someone interested in improving democracy to drive storytelling across digital platforms, amplify student leadership and leading scholarship, and manage editorial workflows.
Please note that this position is open to Rutgers–New Brunswick graduate or professional students. It offers $23/hr in a flexible, hybrid environment with a weekly commitment of 10–15 hours/week. Applications are due on August 17, 2026.

The graduate assistant will work with RDL staff to help plan, manage, and execute Voices of Democracy. Responsibilities may include:
- Copy- and line-editing all blog submissions for grammatical and factual accuracy, as well as suggesting substantive changes to structure and flow if necessary.
- Work with RDL staff to solicit new blog submissions from students, faculty, staff, and partners engaged in work with the RDL.
- Corresponding with authors regarding the status of their blog submission, should major revisions be required.
- Formatting blog submissions on RDL’s website using the content management system (CMS) in a consistent and visually appealing manner.
- Brainstorming and proposing unique and engaging ways to feature blog content across RDL’s media channels (e.g., Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.).
- Providing RDL staff with a weekly ranking of blog submissions to signal which should be prioritized for social media publication.
- Attending a weekly meeting with RDL staff to determine priorities and provide status updates on submissions
- Flagging content on controversial or sensitive topics for further review by RDL staff.
- Assisting RDL staff with other communications projects as needed.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, or a related field
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Strong organizational and management skills; good judgment; project planning skills
- Strong familiarity with and understanding of local and national politics
- Strong personal initiative; self-motivated
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be currently enrolled as a Rutgers–New Brunswick graduate or professional student
Preferred:
- Previous experience with the CMS system Drupal
- Previous experience as a communications intern or other journalistic experience
