Overview

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs – Division of Housing & Community Resources Data Center is recruiting for a Data Engineer (Civil Service Title: Data Architect 1) to help build and maintain our Divisional Data Warehouse on Databricks. This will be the first dedicated data engineer position on the team, with the opportunity to significantly shape the architecture, patterns, and practices we use going forward. The person in this role will play a central part in developing our division-wide data warehouse, which we envision as the single source of truth for the housing and community programs we support. The work will focus on designing and implementing our Databricks-based data platform, building and maintaining robust ETL/ELT pipelines and curated datasets, and creating logical and physical data models that power dashboards, reporting, and analytics.

You’ll work closely with program staff, analysts, and leadership to turn complex housing and community data into actionable insight that supports eviction prevention, lead-safe housing, and other critical initiatives that directly impact New Jersey residents.

We’re looking for someone with strong hands-on experience in Databricks, PySpark, and SQL, familiarity with modern data warehouse or lakehouse architectures, and a commitment to data governance, documentation, and data quality, along with an interest in applying these skills in public service.
