Our Senior Workforce Data Scientist serves within the Labor Market Information (LMI) division in Columbia. LMI produces and presents data, statistics, and analysis related to employment and the workforce including labor supply and demand, wages and income, labor force and unemployment statistics, employment projections and labor force demographics.

This role will serve as an expert on the mining and processing of confidential administrative data and publicly available resources pertaining to workforce development in South Carolina. Collaborate with program and technical staff to ensure data completeness and quality to the maximum extent possible. Provide support to the Coordinating Council for Workforce Development.

Key Responsibilities

The Senior Workforce Data Scientist will:

Serve as the expert within LMI on issues of transforming databases and other quantitative information into resources

Develop methodological techniques that can be used to process our state’s workforce data

Facilitate automation of data analysis and processing

Utilize the support of Systems Integration division to ensure Enterprise Reporting meets both Agency and State standards

Identify and operationalize new products for conveying workforce insights

Ensure management is informed of new technologies that can be leveraged to boost the efficacy of LMI work product

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Education and Experience

A master’s degree in business, economics, public policy, public administration, mathematics, statistics, data analytics, computer science, or a related field and five years’ experience in research and analysis of policy challenges OR a doctoral or professional degree in any of these fields.

Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Expert knowledge of Excel, Power BI, Python, R, and SQL.

Extensive experience with statistical analysis and social science research techniques.

Ability to engage with agency and state information technology and information security personnel.

Additional Requirements

Position may require employee to work evenings and weekends. Other duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications

A doctoral or professional degree is preferred.
