Project Associate Intern: Strategic Communities Planning and Consulting

Location: Mostly Remote (70%) and Periodically In the Field in NJ (30%)

Strategic Communities Planning and Consulting is a mission-driven venture focused on supporting and strengthening community development organizations, labor unions, nonprofits, affordable housing developers, and public sector clients. Strategic Communities works in the areas of planning, strategy, policy, and implementation on tailored efforts to build strong and thriving communities, empower community leaders, develop effective community and workplace organizing programs, create good jobs, provide quality affordable housing, and improve public health and quality of life.

Strategic Communities is seeking a part-time Project Associate Intern to support our dynamic client engagements. The Project Associate Intern will primarily focus on supporting active, community-driven neighborhood planning processes, and efforts to implement neighborhood plan strategies through the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit and other similar programs.

Specific Duties Include (but are not limited to):

·        Writing and editing memos, plan drafts, grant applications, and other content

·        Data analysis and planning-related on-the-ground research

·        Preparation for, participation within, and notetaking at community planning meetings

·        Participation in strategy discussions and check-in meetings with clients

·        Production of maps, photos, charts, and other materials needed to advance project goals

·        Co-management of project schedules to ensure that key milestones are met

·        Correspondence with clients and stakeholders regarding scheduling and follow-up

Key Qualifications:

·        Familiarity with community development and planning strategies and practices through study, experience, or some combination

·        Excellent writing skills

·        Demonstrated ability and discipline to understand expectations, meet deadlines, and consistently produce high-quality work

·        Strong analytical skills

·        Ability to verbally communicate in a professional and relaxed manner with both clients and everyday community members

·        Experience giving presentations and designing and facilitating community discussions

·        Experience working with diverse populations and guiding productive discussions with a diverse range of viewpoints

·        High proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams

·        Bonus, but not required: Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish

·        Bonus, but not required: Familiarity with other mapping or design software like ArcGIS, Canva, Adobe, etc.

Parameters:

·        Part-Time: Approximately 20 hours per week on average

·        Pay Rate: $30 – $38/hour

·        Schedule/Location: Approximately 70% of the work will be done remotely from your home office during normal business hours. However, availability is required to visit client neighborhoods, and attend in-person community meetings, which generally occur on weeknights and weekends.

·        Term: This intern position is being offered as a temporary, summer internship beginning in May and ending in early September. However, there is a high likelihood that it can be extended through the end of 2024 and beyond.

·        This position will provide an opportunity to get hands-on, professional planning experience. It will also provide an opportunity to work with some of the top community-development organizations across the state, including work with their top leadership.
